well i will order the syncromesh, but would you guys rebuild this monster?

See ive decided to keep the beams, and will not be swapping anything else in the car. the way i see it, it will cost 400 to rebuild tranny. (Im doing the work)

Also, i could buy another tranny, and buy into someone elses grinding, that would suck.. then i would have an lsd paper weight...

Also i can buy another beams with lsd, and then sell the lsd in mine and part out the beams, and keep the block as a spare? nah, too complicated

Im planning to open the tranny up, but of course, would not not what to look for as far as damage..

I have been researching and the third gear grinding is caused by damaged second gear synchros (which i think is BS, frm Toyota nation) i really think is 3r gear synchros. but if you can help, just join the post..

I estimate will do this in the next few weeks.

It's the synchronizers. I found rebuild kits that included new synchronizers for the C transmission, I'm sure there are some for the S transmission as well. I want to say the rebuild kit for the C series was around $300 or less and had all the bearings and synchronizers included. One thing I did notice was that the synchronizers are made of brass. Toyota says to use GL-5, which is harmful to yellow metals. That's why SynchoMesh and GL-4 will usually stop the grinding, as they're designed with yellow metals in mind. Though SynchroMesh is about the equivalent of 5W-30. Here is what I ended up buying and using: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/bpo-023-7729 Shipping was only $5 for three quarts.

Being I live where I live the 75W90 to 80W90 is indifferent really. You could go with 1 quart SynchroMesh and top off with the GL-4 if you want it to be thinner. If that doesn't stop it, or at least make it livable, I'd definitely just do a rebuild and run GL-4 from there on out. My uncle has had nine Celica 5-speeds, and five out of the nine had the issue with grinding. He even replaced the transmission on one once, only for it to start grinding again 100 miles after installing it.

I just noticed this is under the suspension/handling/braking section, and not the engine/transmission/maintenance section. tongue.gif

Definitely try running a quart of Syncromesh first, as many members here have had great luck with that fixing their grinding issues. If that doesn't work, then Stambo made a how-to for rebuilding the S54.
