new-to-me 99 gt convertible badly needs a clutch. i'll be doing the work myself over the next two weekends, so hopefully that'll give me enough time.

i already ordered the parts (aisin clutch kit, timken seals, sachs flywheel), along with every nut and bolt i'm probably going to break in the process.

this thread is just to ask for help along the way, post pics of my work, and get yelled at for not doing it the right way biggrin.gif

i plan on tearing it apart this weekend and putting it back together next weekend. then i can get it inspected and titled.

Here you go man, http://bgbonline.celicatech.com/6g/ ... I just replaced mine a few weeks ago using the info here. Just hit the transmission/manual category. Its not as hard as you think =) If you have any questions, just ask.

And on that note, hit the stickies. TONS of useful info in there wink.gif

sweet, thanks.

i've done a clutch job before, but on my 93 pickup, so a fwd will be a bit different.

few questions:
-how long did the whole job take you? i've heard 6 hours to 3 days
-did you break anything? (ie, what should i watch out for)
-is there a pilot bearing? i haven't seen any mention of on anywhere
-how high did you raise the car?
-any hardware you replaced while it was apart anyway?
-and anything you forgot to order?

i know some of the questions might be trivial, but i couldn't find too much. maybe i'm just over-thinking it

thanks again

i can do a clutch in 4 hours
just tabs that hold wiring that are brittle, you are in MD so expect bolts to be hell getting off
no pilot bearing on FWD
i raised it as high as my jack-stand will let me
replace the flywheel bolts, get new ones from the dealer. they are supposed to be a one time use
new gear oil, i use plain 80/90 gear oil.

thanks. that helps a bunch.

new flywheel only a few bucks more than resurfacing:

and the aisin clutch:

flywheel bolts are on their way. if everything goes well, i might even be able to get it all done this weekend. but that's dependent on my hardware shipment

It took me a good 8 hours, but it was my first FWD clutch job as well
I managed to tear my new passenger side output shaft seal, which resulted in an extra trip to town. Find yah a big socket that fits snug over the lip on the seal, then use a 2x4 and a hammer with some caress to get them in right.
Yep, jacked it up as high as I could get it.
Flywheel bolts, and the shaft seals in the tranny.

thanks guys. 8 hours for anyone else is 2 days for me. i'm anal about safety, so blocking, choking, and securing everything will take a bit of my time.

redline mt-90 is on its way, and flywheel bolts were ordered in the hardware order.

well, looks like all my hardware will be here before saturday, so i'm hoping i can get it all done this weekend. that would be great, seeing as how it's supposed to be nice weather next week biggrin.gif

help! confused.gif frown.gif

i don't know how to lower the tranny safely.

axle shafts came out no problem

all the linkages and wires are disconnected.

i don't know what to call everything (i'm a truck guy, not fwd car guy), but the middle "crossmember" (two bolts in the front, holds the trans mounts) isn't coming out because the rear mount goes through it.

i'll post pics here in a sec

there was a great web page, all in japanese, with ~5 pages of great pictures. but now i can't find it. anyone have it?

do i need to remove the "sub-frame" (holds the lower control arms)?

no you dont have to lower the subframe.

what you need to do is back out the trans just enough so it rotates on the input shaft. then rotate it around the rear engine mount

thats all i felt like photographing today. tomorrow i want to get the trans bolted back up, at least

got everything done this weekend. it was a pita getting the splines lined up (trans to engine), but it finally went.

thanks for all the help, guys. my next investment will probably be an engine hoist...

final pics coming soon
