So in my timing belt ordeal I was playing the throwing parts at a problem game and switched out my ignition coil and never marked the position in dizzy was at. Got the timing belt done (eventually lol) Car sounds alright sometimes a misfiring idle. I got just about 240miles on my last tank. Before this I was getting like 320-360 on a tank doing deliveries. Im at a quarter tank and I have only put 50 miles of just driving to school and work not even speeding. I replaced my spark plugs after the timing belt plugs are essentially new put them about 2 months back. What exactly is the stock degree on a dizzy and how do I get to that. (1994 celica gt 5sfe)

verify it's in time mechanically (timing marks) and verify the ignition timing is correct.

Yeah timing marks are perfect I had my family mechanic double check my work. I just dont want to bother him with my ignition timing when its something I can probably do myself. I mean it runs near perfect but it just doesnt feel right (Ive had it for 3 almost 4 years now) and the mileage is god awful maybe I should reset my airfuel ratio??

You didn't mess with the cam shafts like take them out of the engine or anything did you?

If ignition timing is way off it'll run like crap for sure, jump the diag terminals and get a timing light and reset it to 10 btdc.

NOOOOOO lol I know thats a big no no and a ton of work. I feel like its def the angle on the distributor because that is the only thing that was screwed around with. Like it doesnt run like absolute garbage it runs fine like Ive been able to push it too 100 no problems on the highway it just seems well a lot more sluggish than I remember. Ill have my friend come over with his timing light soon. Let me just stress it runs and drives perfectly (to a non aware sense) But only getting 50 miles out of a quarter tank is atrocious for this car. Im almost certain Im running VERY rich.

Are you getting more intake noise now than before the timing job?

Mine was doing the same thing and it turns out that the crank slipped a tooth when I first got it all back together. I would just pull the valve cover again and hand turn the motor to verify the marks all line up.

Played with the dizzy. Reset air fuel ratio boom runs like a champ again. Drove it gentle to a gas station. Then filled up. Drove home and opened it up felt exactly how I remember smile.gif

get the ignition timing set correctly, then advance it 2 to 5 degrees and run 89 octane fuel. You'll feel a nice little bump in torque.

it sounds to me that he has an obd1 since someone was talking about the distributor.

and obd1 or obd2 if the cam timing is off it will still idle bad.

I think the ignition timing being off would cause the idle to either rise or fall, but it shouldnt cause a misfire. It would effect the torque at various loads and engine speeds like he is describing though.

First of all, you DO need to set the base ignition timing correctly with a timing light. Make sure to use a paperclip or piece of wire to jump the E1 and TE1 contacts within the OBD diagnostic port or the ECU will throw off your readings. On my 94 GT the proper amount of advance is 12 degrees.

Next, you should check all the components that were either removed or disturbed by the mechanic while he was changing the timing belt. If the problem didnt exist beforehand, you can be almost sure it was something the mechanic touched(whether its his fault or not its just the way repairs go on older vehicles).

Good luck and keep us updated.

Lol I did the timing belt. Its running better after reseting the air fuel ratio. When doing the belt we quickly mixed up 2 plug wires had a terrible misfire at that point i dropped it off at a mechanic. They noticed my minor screw up called me up and said cars running good you just mixed up a spark plug wire. What my dumbass did not thinking I reset my airfuel ratio with the mixed wires not thinking AT ALL (I feel real dumb for that one) Had my teacher whose been ASE certified with toyota for 30yrs check my car out and drive it he said it drove perfectly in his experience with 6GCs. Im gonna assume my dumb mistake of setting it like that is what did it. Pretty happy as of now driving it. I just gotta keep her running decently until I can get my hands on a stick celica lol or find the time to do a manual swap but that scares me little too much haha
