(Note: I did a search for this already and couldn't find anything about this JDM 5SFE question)

Hey guys,

So the engine on my 95 Celica has been misfiring and the cost to fix it is way too close to a complete 5SFE swap, so since my current engine has such high KMs I decided to save up just a tad more and do a swap. (Can't do 3SGTE yet, gotta save way more money haha)

Though the thing is the more available and lower KM 5SFE ones are JDM, so that is going to be my choice.

Just confirming if there is anything I should be aware of when swapping from 5SFE USDM to JDM? let alone swapping to JDM? From what I gather they are essentially the exact same engine and literally there are no differences in connections, parts etc.
Also the JDM engine I'm swapping in is from a camry since it seems I can only find 92-96 Camry 5SFE or 96+ 5SFE Camry Engines, I dunno if there are any main differences between those 2 engines?
Let alone any small differences between 5SFE Camrys and 5SFE Celicas?

So to summarize:
- Difference between USDM & JDM 5SFE?
- Anything to be aware of when swapping from USDM to JDM?
- Difference between Camry 5SFE and Celica 5SFE?
- 92-96 5SFE Camry and 96+ 5SFE Camry differences?

Also maybe just for the hell of it, any other swap options I can do within the same price range of this swap? haha

Sorry again if this has been posted somewhere, couldn't find it frown.gif

But Thanks ahead of time for any help! I'm new to swapping (let alone JDM swapping) so all the info I can get the better!

Misfires aren't an indication of a bad engine. Misfires are caused mainly by spark or fuel issues...

If the engine has never been rebuilt before I'd rather rebuild it than import one of those so called low milage "JDM" engines... most of the time the JDM part is bull****.

The reason why you can't find any JDM Celica 5SFE is because they don't exist in Japan. Japanese 6G Celicas are all 3S-GE or 3S-GTE (st202 or st205, st204 is a USDM thing)

There are a few differences from a Camry engine to a Celica engine, but the engines are virtually interchangeable. If it is really a japanese engine you will most likely find:

1. no EGR, USDM required in most states if the car came with the system in the first place
2. no flywheel, most of them are automatic
3. different throttle body, perhaps a different intake manifold and fuel rail
4. different oil pan, most likely because of
5. balance shafts, which can be eliminated if desired but not recommended without balancing the rotating assembly
6. some electronics, which you'll have to use from your old engine

In my experience, having bought a camry engine, I would've preferred to rebuild mine. However since my engine failed almost catastrophically, I opted for purchasing an engine which hadn't failed yet, and still I rebuilt that engine that I purchased which was SUPPOSEDLY JDM IMPORTED, which I lated found out was bull****, because there was gray silicone everywhere on every gasket imaginable, indicative of a bad owner and high-milage engine.

They Camry 5SFE kind of looks the same as ours, but a little different though. I'd stick with one out of a 6th Gen Celica because who knows if the wiring is different from the Camry to the Celica. It would just save some headaches.
