I have access to a good deal on a g3 3sge. No tranny, which I don't strictly need. Comes with ecu and uncut harness. But it's from an MR2.

I've been searching on here and mr2oc for answers, but time is passing and I'd like to get an engine sooner than later. I need some help making a list of things I'll have to change to install the engine in a celica. I want to know the items that have to be changed, and whether they can come off the old 5sfe or have to be purchased seperatly. Here's what I have so far:

-Wiring Harness- I hear the wiring harness for an MR2 is vastly different than one for a celica.
-->Can I get a 3sge harness for a celica and plug it all into the MR2 motor and ecu?

-Power steering pump- Absent on the sw20.
-->I think I can use the pump from the 5sfe on the g3 3sge. Can anyone weigh in on this?

-Crank Pulley- The 5sfe crank pulley has a second, smaller track built in for the PS Pump. The MR2 3sge does not.
--> Can I use the one from my 5sfe? Or do I have to find one from a fwd 3sge? Between the g2 3sge and the 5sfe, I have heard that this harmonic balancer is interchangeable.

-Water outlet and maybe water pump- Getting fuzzy for me here. Anyone have input on this?

-Alternator- The MR2 motor's alternator is on it's butt.
--> Put the 5sfe alternator with the 5sfe bracket on the correct side? Put the 3sge alternator and the 5sfe bracket on the front? Get a 3sge bracket?

-What else is different?-

Thanks everyone. I'll try to update the op with info if it comes.

Don't have much experience around a MR2, but you've pointed out the main ones. Is there a reason why you really want this particular SW20 engine -km's, location, price, condition etc? As to why you wouldn't look for a ST202 3S-GE just to make the swap smoother, and not have to worry about changing things around to fit/work or buying additional parts to that would have came with the ST202 3S-GE.

Have a read through the 3S-GE repair manual, as some things are ST202 or SW20 specific.

One thing to look out for when choosing a Gen 3 is whether it came from an auto or manual vehicle, as camshafts are different, you can tell by the letter/number on the timing cover.

The reason would be the price. And location. There's only 1 3sge 3g in the general area right now and it's from an mr2. and it's cheap. But looking over my list up there, it's not THAT good of a deal. So I'll forget about it. But I'd still be interested in updating the post if anybody finds the answers. Might help someone later.

Rusty, you have a 3g 3sge, no? That's the motor that would be my first choice. However All we have around here are beams at the moment so I may have to pony up the extra. The extra money is worth it for the torsen diff, I guess.

Yes I do, factory fitted ST202. You can still have the LSD with the 3S-GE 3rdgen, there was actually 2 for that engine. The LSD was trim & year specific not engine/beams & year specific.
so:
94-95 SS-II 3S-GE W superstrut came with a E56-07C Viscous lsd

96-97 SS-III 3S-GE came with the S54-06D helical lsd

97-99 SS-III beams with the S54-06D helical lsd

Wow thank you for that info, I had no idea you could get lsds with 3gen at all.
