TTAC has a nice article on the cost of homogolating cars for the US market. I'm guessing the limp sales of the ST165/ST185 made the math, "No-Workie"

Probably that or some sort of safety or emission issue.

the reason they cam up with that, so that people bought american cars. So the american public did not have the opportunity to import any european car, reduces competition for american car manufacturers, making it more difficult for foreign car manufacturers to import all their models.

call it what they call it. Back in those days it was difficult to import cars, but doable. But god forbid, ford, chevy making nickel and dime cars, wanted the imports to stop all together. So the gubmit came along.

so now to import a car, a cool car, its pricy (back in those days), so then you just go buy a nickel and dime ford in todays world, we can buy boring toyotas, nissans, and hondas too.
