In coolants, it's the ethylene glycol (an alcohol), also used to avoid freezing at below 30*F (that's why it's also known as anti-freeze).
The radiator cap, however, is what is used to increase pressure in the system. When water is submitted to a pressure higher than atmosphere, it boils at a higher temperature. It's something like 212*F at 1 atmosphere, 14.7PSI or 100kPa, or 1 bar. Submitting it to a higher pressure (most radiator caps increase pressure by 0.9bar which is like 12PSI) makes its boiling point higher. Dont forget the pressure.
Vaporization of a liquid into gas is a product of temperature and pressure. The more pressure the radiator cap holds, the higher the boiling point. They say that in space your body fluids would boil off and kill you before you had a chance to freeze to death. |

Its not homework, It was off my test a few days ago. I just wanted to see if it was me, or if the test was asking questions that were easy for what it was supposed to be.
