So I'm getting to the point in the project where brakes might become a necessity.... problem is, not many people have my exact situation at hand.

I'm running the superstrut suspension in the front.... until further notice.
Given that, I have all the subrame stuff from the clip, no problem. Bought front shocks, no problem. Bought ss3 twin piston brakes, no problem. came with pads so I can find a matching pad size, no problem.

My question comes into play with respect to the rotor (or brake disc whichever you prefer).
Does anybody have any idea what rotor is gonna fit off hand? Anyone have superstrut with ss3 brakes? I can't seem to find much of anything with respect to diameter, offset etc etc.
I'm hoping the GT rotors fit, but I'm not sure if the offset is right. If not, maybe mr2 turbo rotors? 185 rotors?
I could always mix and match, but I'm hoping for some experience and answers if they exist.

Thanks in advance to an experienced community...... whom I do no expect to have an answer for me LOL

do you have the old rotors, and maybe measure them, that way you can compare to the gt rotor specs or the gt4 rotor specs

MR2 Turbo pads will work, even though its not part of the question. Which makes me think that the rotors might correspond to the rotors, roughly the same size anyway. The rotors may even be the same as the stock rotors since SS-III rims are similar in size to our stockers.

Edit: Checking ToyoDIY, the rotors aren't quite the same as ours. The stock GT part number is 43512‑20600 and the SS-III is 43512‑20590, and definitely not the same as the MR2 turbo brakes which are 43512‑17080. Still, notice the end part numbers between the GT and SS-III, 590 and 600. Small changes like that usually indicate very similar parts, often just updated revisions. It's worth at least mimicking the brakes using the GT rotors.

Double edit: When I put the SS-III disc number into Lithia, I get no search results. However, when I simply Google it... Different story. I see several aftermarket rotors that group both the SS-III and GT rotors into the same category, and use the same aftermarket disc to replace both. Specifically: 43512-20590, 43512-20600, 43512-20601, 43512-20630 are all replaced by the same aftermarket rotors. Definitely worth using the old rotors just to test out and see what happens. I'm thinking the hub might be the only difference.

Triple edit:

Part 43512‑20590 (DISC, FRONT) was found on the following models:
Date range Model Frames/Options Found in diagram
09/1993-03/1998 TOYOTA CARINA ED ST20* 43-03: FRONT AXLE HUB
09/1993-07/1999 TOYOTA CELICA ST20* 43-03: FRONT AXLE HUB
09/1993-03/1998 TOYOTA CORONA EXIV ST20* 43-03: FRONT AXLE HUB
02/1994-06/1998 TOYOTA CURREN ST20* 43-03: FRONT AXLE HUB

Noberto, from your thread I read that the ss3 calipers have about a .75" different offset. I'm not sure what that means for the rotors. Just because the pads fit in the hole doesn't mean anything though..... I worry that the rotor won't be centered in the caliper. That's what I need.

And if I had the ss3 rotors, I wouldn't be asking this question.... so no. I don't have jack to go off of...

I don't even know at this point thought if that .75 inch offset means anything thought because it's a different hub maybe? if the hub is the same, the mounting for the ss3 caliper could be located differently.... just frustrating to try and find the part....
toyodiy has 0 on the disc rotor for this car.... I cannot find a part number. the caliper, the pads, the brackets all listed. Not a rotor in the bunch

#frustrated

Check my post above. Several part numbers listed. Also, ToyoDIY has the discs listed in the Front Hub section, not the brakes. smile.gif

Gotta get those diagrams! They show general diagrams before you click any links, so I found the discs right away. Still, you found more than I did. I was trying to find sizes and couldn't find anything for the SS-III rotor. It seems like the offset is the biggest difference.

You know Turnip is running the SS-III brakes. He might be able to measure them for you, or have a comparison between GT/SS-III brakes. It might be worth a PM. S8S8 might have the answer as well.

they are exactly the same? what makes you think they are any different. 275mm plain and simple

also even forgmann confirmed for us on his fs thread where the ss3 caliper bolted directly onto McPherson suspension no problem.

take pic between your mcpherson and superstrut hub like so: I can guarantee they are the same, plus you were the one who provided the pics now that I look at my pm's

the SS-II S/S with the E56 supposedly carries 283mm discs which is slightly bigger than the 275mm SS-II/GT ones.
and as far as I can see, it uses the same part no# as the later spec SS-III.

you will be fine to run a 275mm disc, as the late spec SS-II runs 275 with twinpots

This was the kind of answer I was looking for. If we can confirm the factory part numbers are close (like we have) and the aftermarket support identifies their product as replacement for the oem's of both ss3 and usdm gt, and we know the diameter is 8mm less (4mm in radius which is about 3/16"....

Then it appears the mystery has been solved.... (until I can further prove it by mounting the brakes and totally confirming gt rotors work with ss3 studs)

@Dan - you mentioning turnip with respect to this means it almost HAS to be a gt rotor on the ss3 brakes.... idk how else he would have gotten around it (without asking anyway)

Thanks again Rusty!

he said supposedly... not factual tongue.gif we got to talk to the members here with ss-II superstrut. I can think of that one member from here who ran his car through a huge puddle, purchased used hks hi-power exhaust, its a blue st202

I forgot to mention, Turnip inherited my old Superstrut setup along with the twin pot calipers and rotors, so presumably he's using the SS-III rotors. But at the very least, he can get measurements for you.

bawls.... well, the part numbers match (kinda)
Nothing to it but to put them on there.
Been trying to find time to go the hardware store and get the appropriate nuts to mount my suspension onto the SS subframe. That isn't stopping me from doing the brakes separately, it's just hard to find time to go work on the car and make sure you have all the parts a guy needs to take with him when I'm 30 min from the nearest store really....

QUOTE (FORGMANN @ Apr 6, 2012 - 7:40 PM) *
Twin piston SS-III brakes sold
(no brake pads with this set, Swap caliper
brackt to GT one and use GT brake pads with
no issues .. I bolted on to my car see pic)

so im having issues. you see that forgmann confirmed that if you use Mcpherson brake caliper bracket with SS-III brake calipers they will work. you can also see the difference between Mcpherson pads and Superstrut pads. so my question is will a simple SS-III brake caliper bracket and pistons fix this issue?? it doesnt seem like it, while though the SS-III pad seems to be flatter on the bottom why is there all that space on the rotor that doesn't contact Mcpherson pads??

And now we know rotor size is the same. top is superstrut and bottom is McPherson
