this is where all the sticky threads are for maintenance. for the most part the timing belt should be replaced about every 100k miles. though some of the early 5sfe specs say to change it every 60,000 miles. and when you take it apart you should be sure to replace the timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys, and the tensioner spring, along with the water pump. I'm not sure but I would guess a shop would charge 6-8 hours of labor for the job. so guess $75-90 an hour for labor, and list price for the parts maybe another $200. I went to rockauto.com and ordered a kit with all the parts for $65 and put it on myself. ...it took me a bit longer than 8 hours though, and had to take it back apart again after the first time until I got it right. but it's a good bonding experience with the machine -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.

It's non-interference, just run it until it snaps.

quick question for the beams, is it basically the same? align the marks and the notch? i know parts are not Well the 5sfe only has one cam pulley while the better motors have two. Still just line the hole in the pulley up with the notch on the head. I think its a good idea to use some bright color nail polish and make your own timing marks BEFORE you take the old belt off. And when you put it back together turn the motor over by hand Twice to be sure those marks and the mark on the crank pulley all line up. Wow almost $800 just for the labor of a timing belt job? Ya , they fkk you at a shop, and be sure those are the cheapest parts out there. I'd agree you could run it till it snaps, but you may sooner have problems with the water pump. -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.

It's non-interference, just run it until it snaps. This^ You can change it out in a couple hours if you know what youre doing, if you arent mechanically inclined it could kick your butt the first time round. But if you go to all the trouble of changing it out you should also change the waterpump, oilpump and/or gasket, crankshaft seal and camshaft seal. May also want to change out the idler and tensioner pulley. Easily $1000 to $1500 with parts and labor. I mean whats the point in changing the belt for preventative reasons and not everything else in that area? Thats why you should just leave it alone until something breaks. As stated its a non-interference motor which are uncommon. On most engines when the timing belt snaps the pistons will hit the valves, destroying the motor, but on ours nothing happens except the engine dies until the belt is replaced. Its your time(potentially stranded) vs your money(for something that may not need replaced). It's non-interference, just run it until it snaps.
