Hey guys I have a 94 celica st automatic transmission, I brought this car back to life after 3 years of sitting, The car ran fine and everything but when i was doing exhaust work i put everything back together and now all of a sudden I have a vibration at 900 and below rpm and anything over 3500 rpm it makes the vibration. I ruled out the exhaust since I just got done redoing the entire system, for good measure though i will be double checking this. It sounds like its coming from the back of the motor and on the driver side, I suspected a transmission problem? So I flushed the whole system and put in brand new fluid and filter as well. I can drive the car around just fine and never over heats and the vibration only comes at certain rpm NOT SPEED. So I thought what the heck why not take out the starter and see whats going on with that. So I took out the starter and it looks fine, no chipping of gears or anything. The engine is very stable and has no idling problems so i ruled out being an engine performance problem, I also replaced all of the engine mounts and still no luck. Anyone have an idea of what this could be?????

Anyone have an idea of what this could be????? Specifically, what did you do to your exhaust? What parts, other than strictly exhaust parts did you r and r in order to do the exhaust work? |

Check the powersteering pump brackets, they were loose on mine and it would vibrate over 3000 rpm

Check the powersteering pump brackets, they were loose on mine and it would vibrate over 3000 rpm Hmm the power steering is on the opposite end of the car where the noise is originating from but EVERYTHING IS WORTH LOOKING AT, defiantly at this point lol. Ill check it out and get back to you tonight! Thanks for the reply!!!!!!!!!!! Also the strange thing is, I started the car and it was great for about a week no vibration at any rpm and after i got done with the exhaust and topping off the tranny fluid this started to occur. |

Check the powersteering pump brackets, they were loose on mine and it would vibrate over 3000 rpm Nope It isnt the Power Steering bracket, nor is it the exhaust, it seems like its coming from where the engine and transmission meet. I looked at the flex plate while the car was running and nothing seems to be shaking horribly in there, not even a little, however i cant see the torque converter so that may be a suspect. And or the rod bearings might be gone in the bottom end og the motor, its very hard to tell I used a stethoscope and found the noise coming from both the tranny and motor so im kinda lost at this point. |

Check the torque converter bolts, one time I plastigauged all the main bearings in hopes of finding a knock only to discover it was the torque converter bolts.
When my 5S spun a rod bearing the knock was only at higher rpms, the threshold got progressively lower as the bearing got worse |

Hey thanks! I confirmed that it's the torque converter. I poured in some bar's atf repair which is suppose to help with torque converter shudder and it definitely quieted it down some so $12 diagnosis was a good idea . So I'ma buy a new torque converter. I'll keep you updated when I install it to confirm with you guys that it indeed fixed the issue.
