It's been a while since I've asked for help on here, but I finally have a problem that hasn't been asked about(to my knowledge).
Under moderate to heavy(full throttle) acceleration in 1st and 2nd I'm getting a nasty vibration through the steering wheel and floorboard. The front and rear motor mounts were replaced last summer, and I know one of the rims is warped(getting new ones when I get my tax return), but it doesn't feel like it could be a tire/wheel, even though it almost feels like wheelspin/hop. I'm also hearing a clicking sound from the passenger front on low speed turns(20-30) mostly with my foot off the gas, it's seperate from the vibration, but still something I'll be looking to fix while I'm under the car. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem so I can have a jumping off point before I get under the car(probably go with the jackstands instead of the ramp so I can have the tires out of the way). I've got Thurs-Fri off from work and plan on tackling this problem as well as installing my Blitz front end(if it's warm enough, otherwise it's just fixing the problem). To me it sounds like it may be a CV joint or shaft, but just wanted to hear some opinions so I can have some key areas to look at while I'm under there. ed: almost forgot, I've got ~196,700 miles on the car This post has been edited by aaronc222: Feb 3, 2004 - 10:13 PM |

When I first got the car it had a similar problem, then my dad replaced the entire spindle mount/bearing/cv joint assembly and it was gone...so it could be any of these, that's why my dad replaced the whole thing, didn't have time to look at it and find out the exact problem cause we wanted to get the car done asap.

Thanks for the quick replies. Come to think of it, my old(85) Celica needed bearings at 120k, and this one has way more than that. Can our bearings be repacked(I'm used to doing this on bicycles/skateboards/rollerblades) or do we have to buy new ones?

you need to buy a new one and you better do it fast or it will mess something else up that cost a lot more money i forgot what that was though, that is if it is in fact your bearing, i had the same problem last year.

yes yes do it fast cause if you do like me you will end up cracking your steering knuckel and truning your wheel hub into dust... happened to me and i have the pictuers to prove it...

So much for getting rims with my tax return. But it's better to have it running with curbed rims than not running with nice 17's(looking at either Enkei RPM2 or their new RSV). I can always wait a couple paychecks and still get the rims.
New development: Upon further driving(to and from work) I've found that right turns are ok, but left turns under throttle are getting the vibration. Although it's only right turns that make the click sound(and only occasionally, and it's very faint). This post has been edited by aaronc222: Feb 5, 2004 - 1:35 AM |

Well, rain seems to like my days off. Upon some small messing around with stuff before work yesterday it seems to be the CV joints(boots were replaced last year from off roading in the SCCA, old ones were torn). Only thing wrong now is the caster(lifetime alignment at Firestone ), lots of bump steer.
Thanks for the pointers though. |

ya i would really say it's the cv. The clicking under accel and turning.... the vibrations. That is exactly what mine did b4 I did my cv joints. It will get worse.
