Bought new cv axle from o Riley. Not remanufactured. Had a guy put it in for 50 in a local garage. On the way home I noticed the car vibrates on steering wheel very strong when around 60mph. Also road noise has gone up. On the way home she started to pull right strongly.
So did I get a dud or did the guy put it in wrong? |

well, im guessing when the axel was installed, they probably disconnected the knuckle to lower arm or knuckle to strut. that in itself can throw the alignment off.
however, a bad balanced axel can do this, unless they busted your wheal bearing when removing the old axle. because some axles get seized and seen some people hammer them off. i would take it to the alignment shop... they can tell you if its the suspension, if not, then the axle could be. -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... If it's pulling to the right strongly I would be checking the tracking but I don't think that will be the problem, I would also check for resistance, jack the car up and see how easy if is to turn the wheel. It could be a duff bearing, incorrectly fitted CV joint, brakes might be binding, the axel might not have been fitted correctly, it could be something simple like they forgot to do the wheel nuts up. Take the wheel off and check all the bolts make sure they haven't missed one, make sure they are all tight and in the right position. Do a visual check on the axel, see if it's bent,

If all those recommendations do not point out the problem, while you have the front wheels off the ground, try spinning them and put one hand on the coil spring. If there is something wrong with the wheel bearing, you can 'feel' a bad wheel bearing as a vibration/grinding in the spring.

Make sure the lug nuts are tight, wouldnt be the first time someone forgot to torque them, and it would sure create the symptoms youre describing.
I dont think an unbalanced axle would cause vibration, the diameter is so small. A 5 gram weight on the inside of your wheel probably has 100times the centripetal force as the axle. Perhaps if the axle nut wasnt fastened properly the axle could thrust in and out of the hub(the joints in the axle seem to exhibit this tendency as they rotate), causing a banging or vibration. I also agree with njccmd2002's statement about the alignment. Either the strut or the lower control arm must be disconnected to remove the axle and either could cause misalignment issues This post has been edited by Special_Edy: May 24, 2014 - 11:00 PM |
