If anything you could kind of cheat and have a tune for testing and a tune for the other 99.9% of the time if you had to.

I was always under the impression that aftermarket ecus do not contain protocols for communicating with obd II

In Cali I know it'll fail the visual test automatically. If Washington has a visual test too then dont even bother worrying about the emissions.

Aftermarket ECU's don't, but to run a basic turbo setup a piggyback will suffice. I'm not sure if there are states that don't care if it's modified as long as it passes emissions, that's something you'll have to find out from your local government. I'd imagine there are since I see lots of swapped cars in Tennessee and Georgia, and both states test for emissions. Or just move to Alabama where inspections don't exist.

I bet you could have a 5sfte or 3sgte with BOTH a stock st204 ecu and either an aftermarket or 3sgte ecu run in parallel. Its a couple pounds of unnecessary crap but youd only need a few sensors if any to piggyback a 5sfe ecu onto a 3SGTE. That way you could flip a switch and go from the 3s or aftermarket ecu to runnin on the OEM, till you fool the emissions test and then switch it back. Not sure if it would throw a code or not but Id bet the 5sfe hardware would run a 3s no problem, if you could somehow keep the turbo from making boost.

nope, never happen. the 3S-GTE had a different style distributor that the 5S ECU would not run. they are similar and yet different enough your idea wouldnt work.

as long as you have a good working cat in place, and the car is tuned properly, there is no reason that you shouldnt be able to pass a sniffer tailpipe test.
now, visually, depending on how strict your state laws are, they may fail you just because of the mods.

that said, the 5s, when its in good working order with good cats, tend to blow decently clean. provided you have decent tuning software, (IE: not an safcII or similar piggyback) and can get a good clean tune in it, it should be pretty easy to get the car to blow clean enough to pass, even if you had to create a specific map just for the test..they should never see boost while they test it, so any decent tuner should be able to get it to blow nice n clean without too much hassle.

If there is a visual test, just mount the turbo at the tail pipe like the corvettes do it.
