I know the 6th gen celica is one of the most reliable cars out there, and ive got a 96gt (5sfe) are there any known reliability issues with our cars at all?
What would be the car's weakest point? thnx! This post has been edited by integra_killer: Feb 5, 2004 - 9:19 AM |

I think you actually have the 5S-FE engine, and really, I don't know of any big reliability issues whatsoever with our cars.

I would have to say it's ability to draw out the world's dumbest drivers to pull out in front of you. But actually I would say the weakest point I have found so far is the windshield getting destroyed when the airbags deploy, what was Toyota thinking when they designed this? -------------------- |

yea, my car was probably in the worst condition out of any Celica with 54K miles ive ever seen when i bought it. i had to have the transmission redone, new clutch, then later on had to have the motor rebuilt, all under 80K miles... but toyota was awesome about it... i payed a total of 600 bucks for all that work under warranty.

I second that. 3rd started grinding at 130k, and 2nd started around 150k. Also had the starter and alternator replaced. |

Ok, there is a problem that i noticed
when you boost 10psi with the stock fuel pump, the pump dies, making the car go lean and damaging the pistons then a few weeks later when your at full boost accelerating past 95mph, a piston melts becuase it was previously weakened. aside from that, your good. lol, j/p car is very reliable, no major recalls, and the engines are known to last till 200k miles -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

Yeah synchros can get crappy on them. Main reason is people not using good gear oil and changing it enough. I would change your gear oil every 15-20k miles. I really like pennzoil synchromesh. It made all the difference in the world in my 3000GT and was even better than the brand new synthetic that the dealer put in my g/f's celica.

Trouble Spots
Audio system: The Fujitsu 10-CD changer has a tendency to not accept or eject CDs. (1994-97) Automatic transmission: Automatic transmissions may shift harshly due to rubber check balls in the valve body wearing out. (1994-99) Brake noise: The original-equipment brake pads make squeaking noise. (1994-96) Climate control: The rear-defroster terminals tend to break on convertibles. (1995-97) Convertible top: Due to the balance rods rubbing, the convertible top wears at the sail panel near the rear window. (1995-97) Vehicle noise: The fuel-door release cable rattles. Installing foam pads inside the fender usually quiets it. (1994) Wheels: Proper wheel alignment may not be possible unless a special steering knuckle bolt is used. I guess the only person here that finds the wheel bushes weak is me. Given though that i live in a country where dirt roads are a 100 times better than highways. I had a problem with the left bushing and i have replaced it. 25 km later, both the front bushes are starting to die and the car feels like it has loose suspension or something.
Another major problem for me is that the OEM sideskirts on my 1995 Curren (liftback) sit too low and they crack very easily.(i have fixed them up a couple of times and now i just left them broken. The sideskirts on my 1998 GT4 are smaller and no clearing issues so far but they dont look as nice as the 1995 OEM. Prolly that was the reason they changed them. |

Let me put it this way. We had a 92 Camry with a 3sfe with one of the worst rod-knocks I've ever heard come in as a parts car to our garage... not mentioning a blown head gasket and probably tons of other little things. My cousin and I were messin around and decided to blow up the engine... so we revved the thing to redline and held it there for about 15 minutes before the sucker finally blew up. The exhaust manifold was glowing red, the block started to turn white... and finally, in a great blaze of smoke, boom.
I'd say toyota motors are pretty "f"ing tough. Mechanically speaking, 6gc are pretty soild, both the 7AFE and 5SFE. I personally have problems with interior rattles, from the center vents, my aftermarket sunroof, and door panels... but thos aren't really reliability issues.... ;] and oh yeah... I'm on my second starter. Original went out around 120K miles. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

hhhmm
My Celica has 110k mi. on it (almost) it needs: 2 ABS sensors a rear wiper motor other problems: rattles in the rear suspension area rattles in the doors creaking sounds in the dash groaning when the car goes over speed bumps from the front suspension squealing!!! front brakes noisy emergency brake (but effective) engine leaks oil and drips on the ground :-p 3rd gear syncro is pretty bad... driver's side high beam is letting water in that's it though... and Im being VERY picky and I drive it HARD! BUT! I get: a sporty looking car (lots of people think it looks cool ) sporty feel nice interior feel with good quality materials nice transmission (except for 3rd gear) nice steering good handling cool sounding exhaust makes me feel like im driving a car faster than it really is hehe This post has been edited by holson: Feb 11, 2004 - 2:25 AM |
