I currently have a 94 celica gt and the head is in perfectly good working order. I plan to port and polish and get a valve job done on a new head and swap them out. I currently drive my celica every day and can not take current head off and be without a car for a while. I found a 96 5sfe celica head and I want to make sure everything is compatible as in plug in play or do I need to swap this and that out. I'm new to the Toyota game and there isn't much information on it. I've looked for few days now. I'm used to Hondas and Toyotas are much different.

If it's in perfectly good working order, why? It'll be nothing but a tremendous waste of money and time. FE is Toyota's designation for economy, while GE is the designation for performance. The only worthwhile way of getting power is to swap in a BEAMS, 3S-GTE, or 1MZ/3MZ V6. That or go forced induction with what you have now. One could possibly make a 5S-GE by using a 3S-GE head on the 5S-FE, but I imagine it's more trouble that what it's worth as you really don't see much about it. Toyota isn't like Honda where you can go into a warehouse blindfolded and slap together a running engine, I wish it were that easy. There's lots of information here in the FAQ's and with people's swap threads. For what it'd cost to squeeze every last drop out of the 5S-FE you'd be much better off swapping or going forced induction. Also, welcome by the way. Not trying to discourage, just it'd suck to see you trying to piss into the wind and end up hating the car because of it.

I thought about swapping engines already my current engine is 100% healthy, no smoke no issues what so ever so until it goes I'd rather just beef up the head. Putting roughly 1k into the head with cams isn't that much vs doing a swap that will be headache after headache. I already read how to do it and I'll end up having 4k into a 3sgte swap vs 1k in a 5sfe with decent numbers. Already have a lightened flywheel, and headers not looking for huge power just a little punch.

If you're planning to get a cam grind while you're reworking the head then you can wake the 5s up a bit. For that matter the heads on most of them are quite the same. There are some minor differences if you get one from a 98+ Camry but the 94-99 Celica 5s is the same motor. There may be some differences in the way the EGR is set up on some of them.

There is a few guys that have used 2jz valves. I think they are 2 or 3 mm bigger than the 5sfe valves.

For what it cost to get a hold of a BEAMS these days I wouldn't bother with the 5S. Though if you really want to might as well go all out, if going with larger cams shave the head to regain static compression. Find someone that can do a nice three angle valve job, etc... The one thing the 5S has going for it is that it makes a decent amount of torque for what it is. I think Tigawoods probably has one of the more built 5S's, so give his project thread a look.
