Hey guys! I'm new to the forum and new to the celica. I was lucky enough to have a good friend of mine give me his 95 ST204 5S-FE. I replaced the battery and clutch master cylinder today and decided to start it up. I was sitting inside messing with the radio for maybe 20 minutes or so and I heard a pop. The whole top part of the radiator exploded off!!!!! Heat gauge was reading normal and the water pump was replaced before it was garaged for three years. Any idea what may have caused this? Any advice would help. I'm a diy kinda guy. Thank you!

Either a faulty radiator or bad radiator cap.
Replace both |

Time alone can cause a radiator to go bad. It probably had a crack before it was stored and simply dried out even further. You can get yourself an aluminum radiator if you plan on keeping it for a while and never have that issue again.

Yes the plastic on the tank deteriorates with time but if the cap is defective it can cause pressure to build until the radiator explodes.

Yup, what ^ they said. I found out that it's best to change out the coolant every 3 years and when you don't KABOOM! Now when mine blew up, I changed the thermostat prior and the coolant prior, but not the rad cap.

I changed out the stock rad and got an aftermarket from Autozone (yes it's metal Silly97) and she has been beautiful ever since. -------------------- Brand new 6gc owner! (sort of 2011)

Thanks guys new radiator and cap work great. I was just afriad there was an underlying problem that caused it. My friend did mention it needs a headgasket but it just burns oil. So far its about a quart every 500 miles. No blue smoke from exhaust just always smells like burnt oil and minor smoke from under the hood after extended driving.
