350 Rocket was a good motor, plenty fine for cruising around and having fun.

So, bought something for the Firebird today. A fairly rare shaker scoop off a 305 Trans Am, only 4% of 79-81 Trans Ams came with a 305 so to find a complete scoop/base/retainer that isn't hacked up and in fairly good shape I couldn't pass up. Yes, in case you were wondering the scoops did vary for each engine so to make life easy as possible getting a 305 scoop was imperative. I have my brother's hood to make a template so I can cut mine out, unless I happen to find a hood local for stupid cheap.

The shaker really makes the car for me, sitting in the car and seeing it rock back and forth and then when you get on it seeing the scoop lean to the side is just the coolest thing ever. I like the full Trans Am bodywork, but at the same time I like the streamlined look of the base bird. I think with just the spoiler and scoop it'll look pretty good, and it'll be a little different.

I jumped the fuel pump on the Mazda and drained 6 gallons into a gas can so it'll stop leaking till the tank gets here, then I stepped on my laptop and bonked it up a little. When I got the laptop it had issues, I fixed them, now I made issues again. I can fix it again though. Bad RAM contacts in one of the slots.

So I bought me a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix for $800. Needs a bit of work and has 248k on it but previous owner says it has a newer engine in it which i could care less about because it is going to be my winter beater. Needs a paint job really bad and either different rims or just repaint them but other than that it looks amazing for its age. Has a VERY little bit of rust on both quarter panels. Underneath the ground effects is really clean along with underneath the car. It's straight piped but the rest of the exhaust system being stock it is really raspy but has a nice rumbly and deep idle. Shopping list and pics to come after this stupid laptop updates.

For sure! Shopping list is:
Brakes all around (pads and rotors and maybe a caliper)
Valve Cover Gaskets
Intake Manifold Gasket
Tune-up
Strut
Sway bar
Low Beam
Turn Signal Switch
Wheel Bearing
Coolant is leaking from the rubber to steel line that kind of wraps around the engine from the back and can't for the life of me remember what it was called butdid it to my old gp.

She needs a bit of work and i thought it was a bit much for what i paid for it but it will come around and i am happy with it!

And i can't for the life of me figure out how o post pictures with the stupid url thing..

Earlier today(technically yesterday, whatever) I noticed the engine trying to diesel when I turned it off. The engine didn't make a cycle, just a small delay. There wasn't any knocking or pinging while running, so it's kind of weird. Engine temps were still steady and normal, but it was even warmer today than it has been. After coming home I popped the hood and let it run for awhile before turning it off and it seemed to be fine again. I can't recall exact numbers, but the intake temps can alter the octane requirements. It really didn't even like the open element when it was cold out, but it's definitely an issue now. This sucks because after thinking about it I didn't want to cut up the shaker since it is so rare and in such good shape considering. It would reduce intake temps dramatically as it would effectively be sucking ambient air temps, and even cooler air at speed. Plus the benefit of pressurized air. I guess another option to avoid cutting up the scoop and issues with rain would be to run ducting off the filter base to the fender or front bumper.

The air cleaner assembly I got the other day was off a '79 C-10, so it encloses the filter and has a snorkel on it that would've had ducting going to the fender. Which is how the Firebird/Trans Am was from the factory in later years. Thinking I may do that just to keep the shaker uncut, and cold air induction should be just fine and certainly better than the open filter.

Just to cover all bases I pulled a couple of plugs and looked them over earlier and it looks like the porcelain is trying to glaze and the ground strap looks like iron that's had a torch taken to it. I can actually see a heat circle at the tip of the ground and some bad colour distortion. So I believe the plugs may be a touch too hot... On the bright side the electrode and tip of the ground were spotless even with it running rich... After doing some research I only have two steps colder with the stock style plug. I almost went with a colder plug, but I was afraid to due to how rich it was running at the time and the fact the majority of my driving is short trips driving like an old man. The next step colder(medium-hot) was used in 3rd gen carb/TBI F-bodies and Mustangs from '70-95, and the last step colder(medium-cold) was used only in the '70 BOSS 302 and the '95 Cobra R. I'm thinking I should probably just jump straight to the last stage as the BOSS 302 motor had 10.5:1 comp with a Holley 780 CFM carburetor, so it'll be closer to what I have versus a stock 80's 305/350 and the regular 5.0 Mustang.

Yeah it's not bad. It's not fast but he has fun with it. He's been more focused on his suspension and brakes. Anyway today I found out the OBS leaks around the tails, should be an easy fix.

Today my brother bought this. 1970 Subaru 360, 15000 original miles. Story goes some college students had it and ran into an animal. Car apparently sat at a mechanics shop for years till the guy we bought it from bought it.

Anyhow. The shaker scoop ended up arriving on Friday. In pretty decent shape, will just need some minor bodywork and repainting. The real fun will be in cutting out the hood.

I did end up finishing the air cleaner assembly though. Getting all of the rust off and patching holes from smog crap was a lot of fun, not... It went from looking like it sat on the ocean floor for years to brand new, so quite pleased with that. Just need to grab an air filter and some ducting for it now. Looks like I should be able to run ducting across the passenger fender down pass the core support to the front of the car. Mmm cool air.

I'm sure there's some things to be done with that 2 stroke, 2 strokes like compression and playing with the port size and timing and reed valves (assuming it's not a piston port?) can really liven them up. Bigger spark makes a HUGE difference too, just throwing on a Bosch Supercoil and upping the plug gap about 50% will net a bunch more torque in the low RPM range on most 2 strokes especially older ones. Likely a points/breaker ignition so getting that in proper working order and tossing a big fat spark, it'll be a happy engine.

I bought some supplies to make another 1000 lumen trunk light, but cold white and for the Celica this time and voltage regulated. I'll retro fit the Mazda's 1000 lumen warm white with a vreg as well. It's like a 40W light bulb in the trunk, it's awesome. Probably not actually 1000 lumen, ebay lumens. laugh.gif
