It's getting swapped anyway so it's all good. Actually as far as a newer car getting swapped I'd be more inclined to a 370Z or BRZ.

Put a little more double sided tape around the edges of the cover to make it nice and tight against the dash face, it's somewhat starting to grow on me. I just wish the charcoal had been darker and a closer match like I had thought it'd be based on pictures, only other choice darker was black so oh well. What's funny though I was looking for something dash related and then came across this special edition Lamborghini Diablo's interior:

I feel better about my interior being covered in microsuede now. laugh.gif

Foolishly I did not get a before photo. I intend to have it done for saturday evening so I can get a rough aim on the headlights. I need somewhere to actually aim them and I'm drawing a blank because there's stuff in her barn otherwise it would work fairly well.

If you have a shopping center or stripmall nearby usually back behind them is a good place to aim lights.

The mall and most strip malls are graded above the parking so that the lot slopes away, I'll find some way I guess. Eyeball it for now tomorrow night after I get the 2nd speaker in and mirror back on and take it up and down the street again to make sure it's close enough to drive with. Might have her swing by the shop to do the aim since the floor is level and I can get about 20ft from the white overhead door which has segments.

that part of the local mall has been missing for about the last 5 years or so. The strip malls are all packed close to other stuff so it's about as wide as the truck back there. Oh and I guess it closed in January anyway. For me it was all over when the Cinnabon and Orange Julius left...those two make a mall a mall to me.

So brother's Genesis wouldn't start last night, original battery gave up after four years so to be expected especially with the sound system. Upon changing out batteries he noticed his Scosche fuse holder had melted itself together, which is odd considering it was meant for high loads and came with an 80A fuse and was made for use with 4 AWG wire which is what's used for the amp's power wire. Either going to an 100A circuit breaker or 100A AMG fuse with HMEG holder, someone and their 1,200W RMS subwoofer...

Went to turn out the light in the garage, an hour later the underside of the hood is clean and there's some sound damping material as well as some thermal insulation above the hot parts. May add some strips to the area under the thermal insulation to dampen the sound of the hood, it sounded like a sheet of steel with no bracing. Now it doesn't sound so horrible and maybe it won't bake the paint on it so bad.

I really wish the roof of my Mazda didn't have foam carpet padding glued to it with horrible glue, I'd love the toss a layer of sound damper and foil backed foam to insulate for sound and heat.

Makes me wonder what all insulation is throughout the Firebird, I know there's the hoodliner and some kind of foam between the interior panels and the body of the car. I imagine for the roof it's just the headliner since all fourth gens were cutout for T-tops from the factory, some just happened to end up with a composite panel sealed into place instead of chunks of heavy leaking glass. It's fairly quiet inside though induction and exhaust aside but I want to hear that, I'd say it's as quiet if not quieter than the Celica was.

Maybe scraping and some kind of adhesive remover would take care of the glue on the Mazda so you can put in new insulation?

I've seen this kind of self adhesive padding before and it's not worth the effort to scrape it off. I'd have to use goof-off over the whole area after scraping it and it's a crumbly mess to take off. WAY too much work.

Stupid photobucket is down.

So I was thinking earlier mostly for entertainment and "what if..." then from what info I've found, the LT1 with flywheel and clutch weighs in at 460 pounds which isn't much more than the LS3 at 448 pounds or LS1/2 at 434 pounds. One might ask how is that possible when when the LT1 block is cast iron and the LS block is aluminum, it's a matter of size as the LS block is a fair bit wider and taller than the SBC though length is nearly identical. The "iron block LS" LQ4/9 weighs 520 pounds and is a good example of the difference material makes as well as size when compared to the LS1/2/3 and LT1.

Where am I going with this you may ask, what if GM had made the LT1 all aluminum? LS1/2 block is 106 pounds and LQ4/9 is 216 pounds, LT1/gen I block comes in at 182 pounds and aftermarket aluminum gen I blocks weigh 90 pounds. So an all aluminum LT1 should come in at 368 pounds or so, no one makes a LT1 block outside of one custom billet one there's not much info on. I guess you could always make an all aluminum gen I then add some form of fuel injection, but that's A LOT of money to squeak out the LS1/2 by 66 pounds or so. Though for those wanting to save every pound possible and especially off the front I think there might be a market for an all aluminum LT1, but it'd be entirely dependent on being able to cast blocks and I'm sure the original moulds are long gone and developing a new mould would be so expensive it's not even funny. Just makes you wonder what might've been and the possibilities. If only I were an eccentric millionaire, already eccentric just need the millions. laugh.gif

That bites, maybe some kind of spray on insulation after getting off what you can easily?

Also I noticed.

LT5 was a great motor but it's about 150 pounds heavier than the LT1 even partly in due to the DOHC setup, they have about as much in relation with each other as they do the new LT1. GM engine naming nomenclature, have to love it. laugh.gif

An all aluminum LT1 with a 24x ignition system would be the bee's knees though.

Picky picky, the power band of the ZR-1 engine makes that thing worthy of your love, especially with the 6spd you've got. Not to mention it takes to modding like a Honda engine, they'll crank out 500HP N/A with some work that's not obscene. Lots of untapped power in that engine.
http://zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13680

But nothing like the $/hp of the LS engines.....not even close.

Finally finally almost actually done with this Capri!

started working on pulling the driver side door panel, noticed some missing screws around the outside of it, got the lower half off and saw the foam covering some holes was torn, so I pulled it off and replaced with some sound damper, got the upper panel loose and found that the speaker grill was just floating in there between the door and panel, it falls out, no harm, see old hot glue on it.....here we ****ing go.

Get the door panel popped up and the upper trim didn't release right, bent it a little, no big deal it'll bend back. I get the panel off and see disintegrated masking tape and desiccated duct tape as well as two gaping holes cut into the vapor barrier. Some **** stain cum fart, rather than peeling it back, just cut two holes in it. So I cut off the loose parts and peel it off around the holes, cover the small holes with little bits of damper, make a new barrier from the foil backed foam, and get the speaker in, listen to some music, kill a couple little buzzes she'd never hear, and give up for the night. Got some E6000 on the grill and door panel with a heavy box pinning them together, I'll reassemble in the morning and then get it all waxed up in a few layers and make sure it all looks good, wash the interior glass, then around sun down go get her, we'll get some tacos, make sure the coolant is full, and get the headlights roughly aimed enough for her to drive home.

Or that's the plan, lets see what wrenches get thrown in it.

I'm actually happy with the LT1 and like it, was just one of those thinking things out and wondering about the what ifs. The LT5 would make for an interesting powertrain, one of few if not the first in a F-body, wonder if it'd even fit though. Will also have to go back to that thread once PB is working again for the dyno sheets. Plus with so few LT5 engines made I'd hate to know the cost of it alone on top of wiring, ECU, and getting it mounted into the car.

What I don't get though are the people that swap a perfectly fine LT1 for the LS1, all that money and work for really no gain whatsoever. I can understand if the motor is blown or whatever, but otherwise you're a lot better off selling the LT1 car and buying a LS1 car. I wouldn't swap for anything less than the LS3 personally, but even then it's stupid easy and cheap to stroke the LT1 out to 383 cubic inches in comparison and then you're right back in contention.

Of course none of that really matters for me since I rather buy suspension and braking goodies instead. Hopefully after the holidays I'll be able to convert the rear suspension to a Watt's link, at least then the axle stays perfectly centered side to side no matter what and equalizes the roll center whether turning right or left. I guess it's the next best thing to a nonexistent IRS conversion and it makes a great foundation for other suspension mods.

Also wooo almost done with Capri.
