bought my first actual Shun 8" Chef's knife today. Wasn't really planning to buy it, but I was egged on to go ahead and get it since it was on sale. Now I just need to get some whetstones and some kind of sheath or carrying case for the knife. Others will join it soon.

Pssssh, has nothing on my 19th century Spanish bastard sword. tongue.gif

Japanese Type 30 Bayonet with Jinsen Armory stamped blade serial number 1915, somehow acquired by my grandfather that served in France and Germany with the motor pool. We don't know how.

Well at some point someone will flat the knife against the counter or a plate. It's good to have a decent fine stone around to resharpen.

yes, but I don't let retards near my knifes smile.gif

You still need a good stone and a good steel, both serve a different purpose.

Yup, I had to use a steel to reshape the edge on the sword and then followed up with a coarse stone and then a fine stone. 25" of double edged carbon steel goodness. Bought it a little over a week ago and have been bringing it back to its former glory. It had some pretty bad rust, so took care of the cancerous rust and left the rest for character. Left some of the nicks as it'd be silly to try and cut further into the metal to remove them. Turned out fairly nicely, I've always wanted a sword so when I found it for a good price I couldn't pass it up. There's something therapeutic about sharpening a sword... Anyhow, will have to get a picture tomorrow.

I know the steel is used to straighten the blade when it starts to develop "waves" down the length while the stones do the actual sharpening. Not sure which honing steel or whetstones to get, but I think I'm just gonna match the knife and get a Shun set to be on the safe side.

it's true you need both a steel and a sharpening stone. In most cases you just need the steel then once in a while you actually sharpen it with a stone. It's just that if you get too happy with the sharpening stone all the time you'll grind down the blade until it's not even tall enough to keep your knuckles off the cutting board.

Japanese blades have a 16º angle whereas the European blades typically were a 30º angle. So getting a sharpening set specifically for the knife would be best if it's a preset sharpener you run the blade through.

I have a red stone for honing straight razors I use on my good steel blades, a few pushes on each side sliding down the length with soapy water and the blades are straight razor sharp.

So no surprise I'm still searching for a car, what's tempting is that there are two Miata now that have all of my wants aside from the hardtop. Just have to stay focused on finding the car that's un-serviceable and has plastic interior. tongue.gif I did have a weird dream last night where I had bought another Supra though. Life would be easier if I was a biased fanboy. tongue.gif

Wha? That's an '85, I never thought I'd like red until I got one now I love it.

Here's a black one with a manual but no leathers

Let's face it, to find the one you really want you're gonna have to plan on getting a truck and trailer and go get it from half-way across the country.

I'm not even really looking for a Supra anymore, oddly enough there was one in front of the local gym the other night. It was bright red, but turbo and 5-speed. Guessing by the stancebrah wheelz and plasti-dipped bits and fart can it was owned by some punk-ass kid. Oh well. I'm pretty much set on the 4th gen Firebird Formula/Trans Am with the 6-speed. Sadly there're two Z28 6-speeds at the moment but all of the Firebirds are automatics. I thought about making a wanted ad, but I doubt anyone has exactly what I'm wanting.

I dunno, that thing is up on reddit too and why is the engine picture so grainy when the rest are clear? 5K is way too low also.

I was going to say, didn't he know the 4L60E breaks under stock power? tongue.gif Well, if you go by the sum of the parts you could do it for less yourself. LS motors aren't that expensive and neither is a Supra with a blown 7M.

Probably an eBay turbo and other parts since no names are being dropped.

Today I drove around the truck, dear god do I love v8's.

The rumble... the POWER! The way a truck drives... mmmmmmmhmmmmmm

It's a 2005 dodge ram 1500 with 5.7L HEMI, the whole time I was listening to country screaming murica at people and grumbling along side the engine
