I need a beefy air hammer at work, I've been looking around and I think I'm going to stick with .401 shank since the bits are A LOT cheaper and more readily available BUT if I can find a cheap good high power used .498 shanked hammer I'm going to jump on it. I discovered that air rivet gun and air hammer gun are essentially the same, just a better trigger and slightly lower blows per minute on the rivet gun. I see some big ass 4x, 5x, and 6x rivet guns used on eBay that I'm peeping on to see what they get up to. If they'll stay under $200 I think I may get one and just bite the bullet on .498 bits for them. Rivet guns are rated in the cold steel rivet they ca drive by 16ths of an inch, a 4x gun is able to run a 4/16th rivet, 6x is a 6/16th rivet. Goofy system but it's a nice way to measure relative power of the gun, vs air hammers...they're so vague. Every air hammer is 'the most powerful in class', it's frustrating trying to figure it out. There's also a nice AP 4901 kit for about $210 on Amazon that's the .410 shank version of their beastly 4980 air hammer which is just a 4x rivet gun, but the 4901 is slightly de-rated. I don't want de-rated. I want to be able to hammer the every living rust right out of a stuck axle or whatever I'm working on. I hope the ebay rivet guns stay low, I want a monster in my hands!
There's also the CP7150 which is highly regarded but tends to rattle itself apart or people have a hard time controlling them. Pulled down a spare for a guy late friday at the shop, used my needle scaler attachment on the little crappy yellow air hammer I juiced up, guy works in the steel mills, says 'oh I didn't know anyone else used those jitter bugs, that's a tiny one'. Got a chuckle out of me. This post has been edited by Bitter: Feb 3, 2018 - 9:06 PM -------------------- |

Oh my.
You should get one of those industrial air hammers, used for building skyscrapers and stuff. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

That would be overkill, fun though, but I doubt we have the air supply for it! I'm just so on the fence about it all. I'll know in a few days when the auctions are getting toward ending what I'll do.

Oh and I got one of these for $12 from the Target that's going dead near me.
https://www.target.com/p/ignite-by-spri-174...er/-/A-52123228 It's pretty nice being adjustable, I'm working on getting my left grip up to par with my right. My forearms are getting bigger than my upper arms lol. It goes from 20 to 90lbs, can almost close it at 90lbs in my right hand...once. For when you need to crack open Brazil nuts without a nut cracker.

That's really cool actually and something I could use for work to build finger strength for those times I need stronger fingers!

I always just played piano. My friends that played guitar were always using them though.

I'm certain both of those cost more than that thing though.

Well yeah, but they're marketed towards guitar players. I've never really seen the need with what little I play guitar, but I had been playing piano prior so my hands were already used to stretching and applying force. It's not like you have to apply that much force to the string to sound the note, so I dunno. They must be popular for a reason I guess.

It's kind of sad because it illustrates the ugly side of humanity so well. I'd like to think that some day everyone will realize we have more in common than not, and maybe we can all coexist in peace despite our differences. Of course I still say Karl Marx was on the right track, remove nationalism and religion and there'd be a lot less to fight over... -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

Just realized I never shared my kilt.

So long as I don't shave anyway, people seem to think I'm a girl when I don't have facial hair. In which case it just makes things awkward as I have to stand there and explain I'm a boy after correcting them when they call me miss or ma'am.
