So today when I was going to leave work, I went to go put my car into reverse but it wouldn't go in. Huh. Tried all the gears and nothing, then I tried forcing it into first and it made a crazy loud grinding sound that my coworker could hear from his car with the windows up. Still didn't go in. Tried reverse again, and it would go in with some force but it grinded like crazy. I finally decided to just leave the car at work for the weekend and grab one of the work cars. Pushed my car into the compound, tried putting it into gear again and it finally went into reverse and everything just seemed to "pop" back into place, and suddenly everything was fine. I left it there and took the work car anyways just to be safe. Anybody have any clue what could be going on?

To add to this question, the car is starting to become really hard to put into first gear. Any ideas?

I have a friend that had something similar. He also had what sounded like a broken axle turn out he shattered 3 syncros. And in the combined30 ish miles he drove it limping it home he had done so much damage to the casing it couldn't be fixed.

May not be the same thing. But I would be very careful with it until you can get it checked out

Perhaps the clutch isn't letting go for some reason... Does it move through the gears fine with the car off?

pump the pedal and see if it's any easier.
Also check to see if your shifter cables are bound up or loose.

ya, maybe you've just lost the slave cylinder and its not moving the clutch. see if the plunger on the slave cylinder is moving the lever when you hit the clutch pedal. or if there are signs of clutch fluid leaking.
and what kind of transmission fluid do you have in it?
but usually the fluid doesn't effect it much until the weather turns cold.

I'm not all that knowledgeable with clutches so I'll have a look at those things tomorrow when I get a chance. Not sure what kind of fluid is in there but it hasn't been changed as long as I've owned the car, as far as I know. The weather has started to get quite a bit colder, it's been around 15°C (~60°F) for about the last week now. I didn't seem to notice this problem last year in the cold though.

like Dustin said, try pumping the clutch, if that doesnt change anything, then it possible the clutch broke. one of the springs around the hub broke preventing the clutch from releasing. I have seen this hundreds of times.

Another update.

Pumping the clutch doesn't seem to help much. But today as I was leaving for school, the car shifted into first just fine, then I went to shift into second and it wouldn't go. Got to a stop sign and it wouldn't shift into any gear. Turned the car off and went to get somebody to help me push it, tried it again when I got back and it would go into gear with the car off, so I tried turning the car on and it worked again all of a sudden and seemed to be fine again. I might try bleeding the cylinders and see if that does anything. Or is the problem deeper than that?

the reason the car can shift while off is because nothing is turning.

basics:

when the engine is running and not pressing on the clutch, both the engine and transmission are spinning together. when you press on the clutch, that separates the engine from the transmission allowing you to shift gears. what I think is happening in your situation, you are pressing on the clutch pedal but the clutch disk and flywheel are not separating keeping them spinning.

you really need to pull the transmission off and see whats going on in there

Just float the gears like a boss. Double check the clutch cylinders and line, and if they're ok you really need to drop the transmission and check things out.

Does that basically mean the clutch isn't disengaging? Unfortunately I don't have the time nor the garage space to be taking it apart so I'll most likely have it looked at by a friend.
