30 seconds is the very minimum I let my engine run before taking off. I like to let it warm up for a few minutes in the winter. The oil gets thick when it gets cold and doesn't circulate around the engine as well, so you never want to run your engine right after startup when it's cold. There's a list of other reasons why it's a bad idea to start it up and go, but it's always a good idea to let the engine idle for a little bit before taking off.

I start my car for at least 5 minutes but that's nothing to do with the engine. I just wanna be warm when I get in the car. hahaha.

I like to idle it just long enough so the needle comes up a little to the C.
And I don't rev it above 3k until it hits normal temp.

put a thinner weight oil in for the winter months.

5w30 Winter

10w30 Summer

thatll help cut down on warm up time

Also synthetics do a better job of not thickening when cold. Being you're in Houston how bad can winter really be? tongue.gif The best thing to do in extreme cold would be to use a block warmer.
