 Brakes not as strong as I would like |

Hey guys
I have noticed recently while having my car loaded up and pushing it a bit harder and asking more of my brakes that they don't feel as strong as I would like and I have to put a lot of force onto them to slow the car down. I have recently replaced the front disks and pads and it hasn't had a huge impact. They are still good and work fine but I would like them to feel a bit stronger under foot. I was looking into replacing the hoses with braided lines but was wondering if you guys had any other ideas. -------------------- 1997 White ST202

have you bled the entire system and put fresh brake fluid. old brake fluid really sucks.

Are the pads properly bedded in to the rotors? That will make a big difference as well.

Rear drum or rear disc? If drum are the shoes adjusted correctly and are the wheel cylinders working? They tend to get stiff with age and you end up working the front brakes much harder than normal.
Pad composition can make it feel like you have F1 brakes or make it feel like you've got two ice cubes for brake pads, huge differences. I've been running the Stoptech Street Performance brake pads on my 7th gen Celica and I love them. The brakes feel much larger and the car stops amazingly quick repeatedly, the hotter they get the harder they stop. -------------------- |

My first question is whether the brake-lines were bled fully, and if you put in new brake fluid? This came to mind as I read your line "want it stronger under the foot".
When I replaced my front/rear rotors, I took extra care in ensuring that all lines were bled. It may have took me a little longer than what it should, but I wanted to ensure that my braking power wasn't compromised from my first attempt. |

Well if you have more weight in the car, it's obviously going to not brake as well because you have more mass being propelled forward which means you need more stopping power to slow it down.
