For anyone who needs or wants to know how to disassemble their ignition lock cylinder, here is a quick step by step guide:
Step 1. Remove plastic panel housing your dimmer above the steering column, disconnecting your dimmer switch 2. Turn key to ACC 3. Locate hole in top of Ignition and press and hold button with a narrow object 4. Pull on key while holding button to slide out the Ignition lock cylinder Thats your ignition lock cylinder out, now to disassemble it. Step 1. Remove snap ring on back of assembly 2. Bend tab on top of faceplate (Use a small tip flat head and hammer to get the leverage you need) 3. There will be two inset pins on the left and right of the faceplate, using a blunt object hit on one and the other will come out, flip over and repeat 4. Use a Flat head and pry the top, then the bottom of the faceplate, switching frequently to shimmy off the faceplate 5. Re-insert key, turn if in lock position while holding lock lever from the back of assembly and remove the interior assembly Take note that there is a filler piece that will most likely fall out that goes in the bottom of the interior assembly. Now that you have the assembly out you can remove and re-insert the key to see which wafer/tumbler is causing the lock up. Toyota used split wafers on #4 and #7 that are know for causing issues from wear or collecting debris from wear down of your key and assembly. You can either try to clean the assembly or remove the trouble wafers, just know that removing will reduce the amount of security provided by your ignition so try cleaning first and see if that fixes your issue. Hope that this quick write up was useful to those in need This post has been edited by igpx12: Mar 11, 2015 - 11:21 PM -------------------- 1997 ST:Limitedly Green
