Alright guys. I got a 97 vert with a 5sfe. I just got it and am now having issues. One of the vacuum hoses fell off so i bought some clamps boom fixed right? Guess not because on the freeway my car will jerk violently if i dont either depress the clutch or slam on the accelerator. Car is very sluggish and will not go past 4k. And usually jerks when i hit about 70. The only way i found to avoid the sluggishness is revving it high when taking off and slowly letting off the clutch wearing it down very very fast im sure. My question is what in the world is going on with my car? Both the sluggishness and the jerking at higher speeds. There is also a slight whine or whistle under the hood from when the hose fell off that didnt fully go away. I really need the advice as this is my first celica and my first own car. Anything helps! Thanks.

there are too many possibilities for whats wrong. its a 97 so do you have a CEL on? get the codes read. i would take the car to a mechanic to be diagnosed. then post here whats wrong.

I would start by checking for vacuum leaks and ignition related items.

I'd go over all the basics first; check fuel pressure, check timing, check for vacuum leaks, check condition of spark plugs and air filter, and check compression. Any of those things being wrong can cause your problem. Another thing to look at would be the MAP sensor. Though many of those things should throw a CEL on an OBD-II car, make sure the light is coming on when you turn the key to the ON position.

So you can go past 4K while in neutral but not while in gear? And while idling the engine doesn't shake or idle rough, just has a whine to it? If this is the case, definitely recheck your vacuum lines, check where the vacuum line went to and see if there is a clog in the system, if so run some seafoam in through a vacuum line. Maybe check your map sensor too by unplugging it, once with the vacuum line and once with the connector and see if there is a difference. Also did these issues happen before your vacuum line issue that you had fixed?
