So I was going to go get some chipotle for my day off.

When I turned the car on to turn the motor, the motor ran flawlessly but NON of the electrical bits were responding. The tach was not moving, the steering wheel was locked, the gear shifter would not move, the lights on the time and radio did not display and the annoying beep of door open would happen continuously when the door was open.

My main concern is that if this happens while I'm commuting, everything locks up but the engine is still on (THINK GM IGNITION SWITCHES AND HOW THEY KILLED 100 PEOPLE ALREADY).

As some gentle persuasion with my fists, I eventually hit the magic mark and all the electrical bits came back to life. But as I said, if this happened while I was driving... I mean nah that's not how I'm going to die, not this guy.

What was this? How can I prevent this? What is my best option here?

Sounds like maybe something in the ignition switch is really wonky.

If it happens while driving the wheel shouldn't lock since it'd be in Drive and not Park like earlier, but use the brakes and handbrake to come to stop as quickly as possible and if you can still steer try and move it to the side of the road.

If at all possible try and catch rides or drive something else until it's figured out, but if that's not an option just always drive being prepared for the worst to happen.

I wouldn't think any fuses would be responsible, but I'd give them all an once over just to be sure.

That or something in the steering and shift lock mechanism is wonky... Though could be the lock barrel is entirely worn out. I'd look into removing the steering wheel column covers and inspecting things.
