Anybody have experience with using Plasti Dip on rims? My chrome has got to go. Well, I may keep the lip. Or go monochrome. Can't decide black, anthracite, gold, or bronze. Lots of great pics in the black Celi topic for ideas.

Anyway, I have been watching a lot of videos on YouTube and it looks pretty straightforward. However, the guy doing it is a pro.

Make sure you do it right. I did mine blaze green when I first got my car and it came out looking awful because I didn't know what I was doing. Tape around the tires but not right up to the wheels or it will peel the dip of the edges. Make sure to spray a decent amount on the tires as well so it comes off easier. You could also use note cards between the tires and wheels. Also make sure it is warm enough to spray them and put the cans in warm water before using them. It was too cold when I did it the first time and it came out very splotchy.

Just clean the wheels thorougly; no need for special prep. 4-6 coats can make the finish durable.

i had my whole car dipped i did it my self i work with dip a lot ! u wanna clean the rim really good then put tire shine on the wheel its self cause dip doesn't stick well to oild then use a can on each rim make sure u put the same amount u put on the tire as u did on the rim and it should come off really easy. make sure the san is warm to the touch. (what i do is sit it in front of a heat gun for 2 minutes the shake well, and repeat then its hot) then spray even coats along the whole thing. stay about 6 inch away from what ur spraying and make sure ur at a 90 degree angle from what ur spraying. let me know how it comes out

If it were me: https://www.duplicolor.com/products/shadow/

Would look a lot better than Plasti-Dip.

That stuff scratches and peels like crazy when you clean a wheel. Plus touch ups if you curb a rim are hell. Looks great though lol tongue.gif if you're going to paint it, use the index cards and get a touch up spray gun with paint and hardener or a 2K can of paint and clear. The 2k will chip if you curb it so get rim guards , they're little slippery rubber things that stick on the edge of your wheel and saves it a majority of the time

Went and looked at his profile and the rims are kind of meh... I say it'd be better to just get something new that isn't chrome. tongue.gif

Nope, wrong, Plastidip dosent peel like crazy if you prep it right, a buddy of Bourne6Gen plastidipped his rims 5 years ago and its still going strong, Ive got plastidipped rims myself and its been a b*tch to peel off because it sticks like a motherf***er, Ive done mine two different colours now, and I think they look better with the glossifier on top, but whatever your taste is.

Just a piece of advise though, prep it properly, give it a real good clean, get rid of all the dirt and brake dust, then spray in good conditions and 50% transparency on the first coat, keep it light. Check out DipYourCar videos on Youtube, and you will get good results!

An alternative to that chrome kit would be to go all out and buy some black candy paint and clear. Which also works great on tail lights instead of that night shades garbage.

Hi GTMike

Did you decide what you are going to go with...my wheels are also black with a chrome insert around the innerside of the rim so if you have a picture or two Id appreciate a peek...?

Lol I didn't realize how much my comment sounded Like I was talking about Plastidip
I was referring the the duplicolor kits

All the Plastidip I used sticks awesome. Also if you're thinking about the anthracite cold, if recommend 5 coats of matte black and 4 costs of pearlizer instead, looks a lot better and is nearly the same color.
