Hello everyone, I've had my celi for about 7 months. First had trouble with the EGR Valve, check engine light still comes on with the code for EGR Valve even though it's new. Car randomly doesn't start, you can hear the relay click once but that's it, sometimes it takes a few tries then starts but sometimes it won't start at all. Took her to the mechanic several times, finally this last time they said it was the starter, not too sure about that yet, seems to be alright for now however it now makes a weird noise when I start it, it takes a little while to finally turn over. It kinda sounds like the part needs to be greased badly. I've continually had issues with the idle since I got her. The mechanic who worked on her when I got her said it was vacuum hoses that weren't on correctly. She doesn't idle high all the time usually on really hot days. While driving and pushing the clutch in she stays betweem 2500 & 3000 RPMS, i usually have to "burp" her to bring the RPMs back down to a normal level. Anyone have a clue what I can do to fix her?? or any ideas that might be helpful?

there are way too many things that could be involved here. give it a tune up first. it does sound like you need a new starter. when i was getting EGR codes i had to change the VSV behind the block under the intake manifold

on hot days might indicate a temperature sensor issue, I'm just guessing. but this would generate an error code. Have you checked the error codes?
My high idle problem was caused by badly connected hoses creating a vacuum leak. there is also a throttle plate adjustment screw that could be messed up. it's not for adjusting the idle but more for getting the throttle plate high enough so it doesn't stick to the throttle body. also there is an idle control valve ICV that sits near the throttle and the computer uses it to control the idle. if the computer thinks the engine is cold, it will idle high. also your throttle position sensor might have an issue as the burping thing fixes your idle. EGR can be either the valve, the modulator, the sensor, or the solenoid so you need to do in depth testing before replacing anything.
Does seem like the starter is at fault. One way to know for sure is to pop start it, if it starts right up then you'll know for sure. Also as mentioned check the IACV and everything to do with the throttle body. Coolant sensor should throw a code, but sometimes they won't and can cause issues. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed
