Hey guys, I am doing a manual swap in my 95 gt convertible. I now have my parts car, but I am very stressed out trying to decide what clutch to get. I wi be boosting it as well, around 8 psi. Any thoughts on what clutch kit to get for my soon to be 5sfte??? I've been looking at the stage 2 clutch kits on ebay, (xtr, ufc, ppc, fx, emc) these are all around $100, and say the can handle about 268 hp, 248 lbs of torque.
I've seen ppl online saying ebay clutches are junk, n others saying they are not....I would appreciate any input or experiences anyone has had. I've also looked a bit into Exedy, ACT, and Competition Clutch. Any input on these as well? Are they worth the extra $300?? I will be driving my car around town, not any race tracks. I dont want it too gabby to where it's annoying to drive in stop n go traffic, but I don't want it slipping at all under boost when I get on it. Please anyone's input, I'm driving myself nuts trying to decide!! |

For the love of all that is good don't buy an eBay clutch. I believe what most people end up doing is making a hybrid clutch based on the 3S-GTE. Someone here that's been there and done that should be able to tell you exactly what to get.

Get an Exedy clutch and an OEM throw out bearing and you'll be good for quite some time.

The only Exedy clutch I can find for my car is the exedy oem...but I would guess that wouldn't be able to handle the extra torque when I boost it. Where can I get a stage 1 or 2?

Act makes great clutches in general and ones that can hold boost for 5sfe. Go to acts website and get the part number they can be found on eBay/amazon new for around 250-400 depending on what act clutch you choose. They are all rated differently and tell you the specs some are oe replacent others are street ect... Plus act is a great clutch. EBay is horrible lol.

One is a heavy duty street sprung (hdss) and the other is a sport performance street sprung (spss). Any ideas on if either of these would be a good choice, or which is better? |

ACT clutches have gone to crap. their quality and customer service is junk. Southbend clutches have held up and I have one in every one of my cars.

Southbend has recently caught my eye, is this a higher end brand? I was looking at the southbend stage 2 daily drive kit, rated at 225 lbs for about $300, and the stage 2 extreme rated at 300 lbs for about $400. Any thoughts on which would be better for me? I don't want to have a higher performance clutch than I need. I want to try to keep the feel smooth and as close to stock as I can, as I will be driving in town a lot. |

Correction, the 2nd southbend is stage 2 endurance, not extreme |

Southbend, that's the one I was thinking of. The stage 2 should be enough unless you're just overly abusive. Comp Clutch is good as well, but expensive.
Which I have noticed the Comp Clutches rattle a lot, at least on the Genesis where it went from a dual mass flywheel to a single mass anyway. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

if you are staying all motor, no boost, then you only need the stage 1 clutch. dont spend more money than you have to.

He said in the first post was doing 8 psi, otherwise I'd have said to get an O.E. Exedy replacement for $100 and change.

Does anyone know which Southbend stage 2 would be better for me? Stage 2 daily with 225 lbs torque capacity, or the stage 2 endurance with 295 lbs torque capacity? |

The stock 5S makes 145 ft lbs, figure in 8 pounds with the "typical" 6% increase per psi and you're at 205 ft lbs. Which coincidentally is less than the 1MZ Lamont has with his O.E. Exedy clutch. Kurt95, another 1MZ swap, also used a Southbend clutch like Smaay if I recall correctly.

I saw in the dyno results page, and it seemed that some people with similar set ups were pushing 250-270 lbs at the wheels. Are they doing something more, or should I expect high torque results? Also the 225 lbs capacity is at the crank. I have now seen the have a stage 3 daily, which is more for daily drive, but has a 300 lb capacity. I spoke with Dave at Southbend, and he pointed me towards this one, because I was not sure what to expect for torque results. This one sounds good, but is $250 more!! And I don't want to spend that if I don't need to. What kind of torque should I expect with my projected set up????

I just put a phoenix friction clutch in my 95' GT. Got it off ebay for about $260 USD. It came with a new fly wheel and a 6 puck stage 3 disk clutch. The only thing I suggest is to keep the oem pressure plate beacuse I think this one is too weak. It holds fine but the petal is not hard enough I think.
