Well today I noticed my inner shaft seal is seeping as well as the rear main seal is seeping. I think it is time to replace the clutch as well.
1. Any how to or removing the manual transmission on 7AFE engine? 2. Should I replace with OEM or after market? 3. IF aftermarket which brand? Thanks in advance. Engine is 7AFE, Car is 1996 ST hatchback. This post has been edited by msk59: Dec 20, 2015 - 12:25 AM |

the 7A uses the same clutch as the 7th gen. get a clutch for a 2000 celica GTS. OEM is a good stock replacement. the price is good too from your dealer.
if you want something more upgraded, get a southbend http://www.dxdracingclutches.com/ecommerce...fm?item_id=2894 I havent written a guide for changing the clutch on a 7A but I did for 7th gens. they will be similar http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=334603 I did write a guide on here how to pull the 5S-FE out. there will be a bunch of similar steps here too -------------------- 2001 Celica GT-S Turbo

Thank You Smaay. Really appreciate it. The south bend shop you mentioned. Should I get the 2000GTS clutch or one for 1996 ST?

For removing the transmission the easiest way I found was to remove the engine with the trans still attached. My case I had some corrosion on the guidepins and it wouldn't break free from the motor. But basic how to is....
1 - remove the starter 2 - remove the rear transmission mount from the transmission 3 - prepare to support the transmission weight with a jack or hoist 4 - remove bolts that mount transmission to motor 5 - remove transmission mount on drivers side 6 - pry and wiggle transmission from motor and be careful not to damage flywheel cover 7 - drop from engine bay Got mine out in about an hour, worst part was fighting with the guidepins and clearing the rear transmission mount as it would not unbolt from the transmission and I had to pull the center bolt from the mount. Hopefully this helps some, sorry for no pics to explain. -------------------- 1997 ST:Limitedly Green

Thank You. I guess my biggest 'fear' is the axles (LOL). I have re-ring the engine before and other small an other stuff but never the axles.

Personally I would get the 2000 celica. but like I said they are probably the same clutch.
the axles are hard to get out alone. have someone hold the axle straight and turn it while you use a prybar. it will pop out -------------------- 2001 Celica GT-S Turbo

Thanks Smaay: At What point do we need to remove flywheel. I need to replace the rear main seal as well.
On a separate note. You were experimenting with a 6 speed transmission on a 7AFE engine. Any success? |

Remove the flywheel for resurfacing, so that is technically the "last" step in the removal, and the last step before re-installation.
A big obstacle, literally, is the subframe crossmember. It sits in the way of getting the transmission down, so either remove engine/transmission as one like igpx12 mentioned, or remove the crossmember (which is not fun) to gain more clearance for the trans. -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]

Thanks Swissferdi. I checked the manual and it also says to remove the crossmember. Can you elaborate why it is not fun?
thanks |

I don't know swissferdis experience but mine removed fairly easy, most I had to work around was some corrosion on the bolt covers. To give an answer to your question to smay, you would have to remove the flywheel to access the rear main seal. As far as the flywheel, recommended thing to do is resurface or replace it when you replace the clutch because it will be worn from the previous clutch. Also look into replacing the release bearing, just something to save you down the road.

Thank You. Yes once I get in, it will be done completely and correctly. I will get the complete clutch kit. I like working on projects. Right now I am collecting info and reading the Service Manual. Service manual sends you back and forth on removing different items so I am outlining the steps I need to take and then just follow those. So far the car is 99% rust free so not anticipating any issues. After reading up on the half shaft (axle) removal, (both were replaced within the last two years) I don't anticipate any resistance there. The 'tricks of the trade' is what I like to learn and that is where experience from you all is very critical as every experience is different so this information comes in handy when working on the project like this.
Currently, I installed the eBay headers and the downpipe is about 3 inches short. Cheela had warned me about that so now I found a place where I can get a extension pipe to be welded so the downpipe can be bolted to the CAT. Thank You again. Most that I do to get the axles out is use a pry bar at the axle outputs on the transmission and rotate the axles every other pry to try and wiggle them loose in sense. while you're doing that you might as well replace those output shaft seals and clean up the splines.

Yes that seal is leaking as well. So what you are suggesting I pry it and then rotate and pry again until it comes out? Thanks

Yes, as you pry along it should just pop loose.

Lol. You are right. First she said that we don't sell celica parts here. I am like what do you mean? Isn't this a Toyota dealership? There was a pause and then she said 'I don't know what I was thinking'.

Yeah she was being lazy or she didn't know what a celica was lol. I can see us being asked vins for our celicas because of the options offered like engines, brakes and obdII based on year and submodels.

Thanks Smaay. You have always been very helpful. I have copied the part numbers and will hit the local dealership here in Tulsa to see what they say. I also have internet prices for the same part..
On a separate subject. Did you ever installed the 6 speed transmission into a 7AFE engine? |
