Hello I'm in the process of rebuilding the 1mz motor off a 1999 solara for my celica project and I was looking to replace the cams with 3mz cams and I was wondering if this would make a difference? I have herd 2mz cams work but I'm not sure what model Toyota that engine is in.
Thanks for your info and happy new year 2016!!!

Wikipedia can tell you a lot about what models have what engines. The 3MZ is a VVT engine so I'm not sure the cams will run correctly in a non VVT engine...?

yes you can put 3MZ exhaust cams in, however there are 2 versions, you want the early version. the tab on the cam for the position sensor will be in the right place.

yes you can use a 2MZ intake cam.

its the 3MZ intake cam that has the VVT gear on it

Thanks smaay. The 2mz intake cam is on what model toyota? It looks like they were only available in Japan.

you are correct, the 2MZ is not a USDM engine.

Would just doing the exhaust side cam make a noticable differance?

yes, longer lift and duration, better overlap, higher top end.

since i put a 1MZ in my car to get it passed the BAR, i can tell a huge difference in the power band. the 3MZ had much more top end

Just looking at the cams I can defiantly see a big difference in the lift the exhaust cam is much smaller. I was reading up on the mr2oc forum and I see you posted about this. I was wondering if there is a certain year 3mz I would be best to pull these from. Also would I have to go with the 3mz valve lash clearance on the exhaust cam side? If there is a difference.

What year would be the easiest 3mz to grab cams from that would work with a 1999 solara?
