Have a 94 ST Manual Transmission. Rebuilt 7A-FE engine. CEL pn and throwing code 071. EGR valve doesn't hold vacuum when I apply vacuum to see if engine stalls.

Looks like I need to replace the EGR valve and possibly EGR modulator. I'm wondering if either of these are cross compatible with other models? For some reason both of these are very expensive for this engine and cheaper for other engines.

For example, I've only been able to find used EGR valves for the automatic transmission, not the manual transmission. If I could use the one for the automatic, I can save a bunch of dough. Are these interchangeable even though they have different part numbers?

Likewise for the modulator. I've found aftermarket ones on Ebay very cheap for the GT 5S-FE engine. The ones listed for the ST 7A-FE engine are much more expensive. Anyone know if there's any difference between these or if they're interchangeable?

Thanks for any guidance on this.

I like to use RockAuto to cross check parts interchanges.

I had a 7A-FE and used one of the Densos on eBay that was for another Toyota or Lexus and it worked, it was like $15? shipped versus ones specifically for the 7A-FE which were more but it had the same ports and the size was near identical. I'll try finding it for you but that was over two years ago.

Thanks for the response. Rock Auto gives 4 different part numbers for these parts, 1 each for the ST automatic and standard and 1 each for the GT automatic and standard. The most expensive one is for the ST manual, which, of course, is the model I have. The EGR modulator is more than twice as much for the ST manual as for the automatic. That's why I was hoping they might be cross compatible.

Thanks. I can't imagine there's much difference between the parts since these are mostly just valves with diaphragms. As long as they have the same ports and in the case of the EGR valve, everything bolts on the same, I don't see why they shouldn't work. I'd love to pay the $15 for the modulator rather than the $73 Rock Auto wants for the exact match item.

Found it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/EGR-Valve-TOYOTA-L...1aI&vxp=mtr

Turns out it even has the part number RockAuto gives for a 7A-FE with the manual. Was fairly sure the one I had found was a Denso on clearance, but again that was over two years ago.

IIRC if you put the 2 wire that go to the sensor in the egr it gets rid of the cel.
Job done.

It does I know on OBDI cars as I put a jim clip into the EGR sensor plug when my modulator went out as I wasn't about to spend $80 on something that didn't matter in a non emissions state, but since he's in California even if it went unnoticed during the visual it might cause it to fail tailpipe testing.
