Hey all, I'm working on another 6gc, this time a 97 Limited Edition Vert with a 5-speed manual. Recently I came across too good of a deal on a Camry with 95k on the motor and forgot that the 2000 Camry has a different 5S than the 97 Celica.
So, I'm wondering if anyone has done this swap, or if anyone knows the steps necessary to pull this off. I've found one post from Tweak from years ago when someone was asking about doing the same in a 5th gen; but he didn't get in to more detail than "use the harness from the original motor, swap over the sensors and add the distributor" so any info would be great! |

You need to decide whether you want to use the celi or the camry ECU (if you even have that).
There are a number of differences: -Celi is distro ignition, vs Camry wasted spark w/ two coils -Because of above, Camry has cam position sensor on the front which celi has in the distro directly -00-01 camry had the "last and greatest" 5SFE with 135HP, and I believe different injectors (fine mist type), so you'll need to check to make sure impedance type is the same -Camry has the balance shaft, so you might want to remove that (need to drop pan, remove bs, tap and close bs oil feed) or leave it for marginally smoother and heavier engine I'm sure you'll discover other things (o2 sensor may be one of them). Not sure if cams are different b/w the two engines. Even if they are, the difference would be so minor that you might as well ignore it. Easiest would be, as with any such swap, to use the donor long block, and bolt everything else to it from your old engine - intake manifold with all sensors and whatnot, exhaust, timing covers (b/c of cam pos sensor, or just leave it in place), all accessories, mounts. If all the connectors on the intake manifold and TB are same, you can leave the donor one. Of course, pop in the distro in place of the coils, and use the old harness & fuel rail. To make it all work with the Camry ECU to gain the few HP would require you to match electrical pinouts for the ECU, at least, and probably a bunch of other stuff. Doable, but you need to do some research here and decide whether you're up to the task. Hope this helps. |

In a sense very similar to a 4th gen 3sgte swap for turbos, while the Camry COP is the NA version. Wiring is the key here. Run the ECU made for the engine you plan to buy. or depends what you plan to scavenge and what is compatible to put on your distro engine.
