Very cool car man, if the clunking isn't a product of the inner or outer tie rods being no bueno... then it's almost got to be the rack and pinion I guess. I just rebuilt my rack and pinion which wasn't a bad job really. hardest part is getting it out of the car. This is all assuming it's the same system as a FWD GT...

Thanks! The tie rods feel fine, there's no excess movement in the tires. I'm hoping that it's a case of the steering shaft joint into the rack that needs tightening.

QUOTE (Bitter @ Jul 15, 2020 - 2:20 PM) *
Is it a big boy clunk or is it a little Honda clink? Used to see work steering racks and steering ujoints on Camries (Camrys?) that made some god awful clunking when turning.

It's a medium clunk Jordan. Not suspecting the Super Strut, but more substancial than say endlink chatter. Like I said above, I'm hoping that it's a joint in the steering shaft.

That'd be an easy fix, hopefully that's it.

When you have the joint off the rack snap some vice grips on the stub gently and rock the rack back and forth a little to check it's play too. I have a little clunk in Mazda when turning side to side that's either rack or inner, Celica has a little dead zone in the steering center from rack wear I think. In the Camry I'm thinking of the ujoint was locking up when turning and was a pretty distinct feeling. Later is when the rack skipped, but that poor car had nearer to 1/2 million miles on it. Didn't know a 5S could last that long. I'd be more suspicious of an inner tiecrod or some rack to pinion play, there is an adjustment but I'm not sure how adjustable it actually is on the car.

I took the car to get aligned on Wednesday.

They were able to get it lined up, but still pulls to the right at low speeds.

It gets better when you're on the highway, but once you slow down, it becomes obvious again.

I need to get under it this weekend, Install the new crush tubes, and see what the deal with my rack is.

Tires do weird things sometimes. Swap front tires side to side & see if it pulls the other way.

Does the pull change under acceleration/engine braking? Are all 4 brakes the same temp after driving around like a normal person?

They're directional, so while I can do that as a test, I can't leave them like that for any serious driving.

I don't think so. I was testing that on Friday as I was driving home from work. I never thought to check the brake temps after driving, I'll need to do that.

.

So, I never got under the car this weekend, I had a buddy come up on Saturday that wanted some help installing an axleback and downstream O2 in his IS300, so that was what got done.

I did wash the car though, and I polished the muffler a bit, cause that was simple and bugging the crap out of me.

After spending a majority of the day with my focus not on the kids, Sunday was spent with my focus on them, because #dadlife. So, I guess we'll see. I do need to double check tire pressure though, since that is a 5 minute job.

I'm curious what it ends up being because that is a weird problem.

Took the cars out for a little cruise on Saturday. My sister was kind enough to take the kids for a couple hours.

Luke came by on Sunday, and with his help, found that the steering rack bolts were just snug. I managed to get a full turn out of the left side, and 3/4 turn out of the right.

I'm excited to drive it this week to see if the clunking is permanently gone.

"Is that a Supra?"

Nice find on the rack, was that something you had apart or what?

lol

Yea, I pulled the rack off the subframe when I pulled the motor.

I thought they were tight, but they were just snug, which isn't good enough.

Didn't somewhere align it after? Seems like the kind of thing you'd catch doing that. Has it helped the pulling?

I had it aligned, yes.

The issue was so strange, I don't blame them for not catching it.

I need to go back and have the toe adjusted for the new rack position, but it feels better for sure.

I knew you, of all people, would like that. My buddy thought is was a funny correlation to Initial D.

It won't be until next season. I was lucky enough that Stacy let me get this one in on such short notice, but we will let you know!
