hey, i'm the owner of a 1994 celica gt with the premium stereo system. today i installed a new headunit, bypassing the stock amp and running the speakers off the amp in the headunit. getting the little blue connecter out from underneath the amp and removing the 2 clips wasn't the most enjoyable task, but hey - no pain, no gain. after wiring the harnesses together, i realized that the largest speakers on the doors (predominately for bass - at the bottom of the doors, i don't know the size off hand, sorry =/) aren't working. the mids, tweeters, and speakers in the back are working fine. i tried reconnecting all of the speaker wires again, just to make sure nothing was loose - but it appears that there isn't even wire in the harness for these speakers (nothing seemed to work).
![]() (also, the yellow memory wire from the vehicle's harness held no power under any circumstance, but this problem was solved by running a 12v wire with an inline fuse off of the battery.) any help would be greatly appreciated. This post has been edited by Zack: Feb 28, 2004 - 1:26 AM |

Are you saying that you have 3 speakers in each door? If so, I know that Toyota had a premium sound system on some vehicles with a separate woofer, mid-range and tweeter. In these set-ups, I believe there was a separate amp for the woofers underneath the driver's seat. This may be the cause of your problem. Check this out and see if this is the problem. If not, I'll have to do some more thinking.

I have the same speaker configuration....your best bet is to plug your amp back in, and just use this wiring harness from Metra-
Metra Amplifier Integration Harness-- (cheapest price on this harness) This is what i used and it sounds great and is the right way to do it. This way, you dont need to splice anything or run 12v wires for the memory wire, just solder the wiring harness to the stereos wiring and its plug and play from there. ![]() -------------------- 3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting. |

Runriot - thanks for the information. Yes, I have 3 speakers per door; mid-range, woofer, and tweeter. I'll have to check and see if I have an amp under my driver's seat. If so, what would be the best way to wire the woofers back up, and why would the harness from the amp in the dash turn them off in the first place?
Silver94 - Thank you for that link. I purchased a wiring harness adapter for 87+ toyotas, which plugged right into the clips from the external amp (as I said before). I'm curious, though - the head unit that I installed has an amp already built into it, which is powering all of the other speakers right now. I'm just looking for a way to get the woofers to run off of it, as well. Thanks again in advance. |

No, you can trust me on this Zack. You dont need to use the headunits power....the Metra harness i linked uses RCA plugs to send speaker signals(not power signal) to the amp under your drivers seat and also to the one behind the dash (second stock amp).
Just plug in the two stock amps again and get rid of the generic Toyota wiring harness, then order the Metra 70-8112 that i linked. The old harness wont do you much good for your specific application, and the Metra 70-8112 will make for a direct plug and play installation and great sound quality. ![]() ![]() Any questions let me know....If you do it this way it makes things sooo much easier. -------------------- 3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting. |
